While we were in the early stages of brainstorming, we came up with an UHMAAAAZING idea for Sofia’s senior pictures… Let’s fill some water balloons with GLITTER… annnnd you hit them with your tennis racket.
Half expecting her to think I was joking, she surprised me and was immediately on board. After a few practice runs and an incredible slow motion video, we were determined to make it work. And let me just say… for those of you who have never filled a water balloon with glitter….
It’s exactly as terrifying as it sounds.
…I had at least four balloon fatalities.
…And may or may not have left my counter at work covered in blue and white glitter…
Somehow I managed to fill a small bucket with a few.
I am also very happy and proud to report that even in the 90 degree heat of that day, I managed to drive thirty minutes to the shoot without ANY of them exploding! TOOT TOOT!
It’s really important for me to get to know the clients, especially with senior pictures, so that we can have a session that’s not only fun, but really captures their personalities. And I think we nailed it. Up until the shoot, I had really only known Sofia for show stopping baking skills (believe me when I say this kid makes THE best chocolate chip cookie bars I’ve ever had), and her easy going personality I’d come to know and love at work.
But when she stepped in front of the camera, her confidence radiated.
Especially when she went into the ocean. It was clear that she was in her element, and her smile was contagious. It’s something I actually admire, because, truth be told, in my senior pictures, I was never that comfortable… and the pictures show.
After the outfit change, Sofia busted out her tennis racket while her lovely mother, Tina, carried the bucket of water balloons that felt like time bombs. We knew that those pictures had to be last, because nobody was sure what the glitter carnage would be. And that ended up being the right call, because
I can only imagine what people on the beach thought when they saw Sofia lob these into the air and crush them, but I will say it was one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen… and we have the pictures to prove it.
Truthfully, I don’t think we could have asked for a better night. The weather and the light were absolutely perfect, and that out of the box crazy idea we had with the water balloons actually worked!
Taking Sofia’s senior pictures was an absolute honor, and is sure to be a session I will never forget!
